Furled Leader Basics

Em with a Spectacular Brown

Hi! It's Emma again! Here's a beautiful Brown Trout I caught last Spring on a Scoubi Snack. A fly I designed and tied. Hot pink of course!

Our Furled Leaders...
We now furl leaders from 0 to 8-wt and 3' to 7' in thread, spiderwire, fluoro-carbon, monofilament, and have recently added custom blended materials into our designs for the utmost hi-performance furled leaders!

Thread furled leaders are excellent for dry flys and nymphing. For the majority of dry fly, soft hackle, and light nymph rig fishing you do you will like the floating thread furled leaders. All of our floating leaders are pre-treated with Loon's Premium Aquel floatant. Even with a nymph rig you will appreciate the floating thread furled leader. It will not drag your indicator down and picks off the water with ease and little spray. They are the most flexible and land the softest. Zero memory but do have a nice stretch which really protects light tippets. We fish 90% of the time with thread leaders while nymphing and dry fly fishing. Definitely our most popular.

The monofilament furled leaders are the second most popular leaders we sell. They are the stiffest and really turn over larger flies and multi-fly nymph rigs and indicators. Monofilament leaders float well too. All of our floating leaders are pre-treated with Loon's Premium Aquel floatant. They do have memory so a thingamabobber will kink them if you use it on the leader. We mostly use a 1/2" round float with toothpick so not a problem with them. If you need to swing a heavy 4" articulated fly or other half-chicken-sized fly consider using a shorter, heavier leader made from fluoro for sinking flies or mono for floating flies. The turn-over power of our monofilament leaders is awesome!

Spiderwire is very strong and produces a furled leader with near zero stretch. We developed these for bass and carp rigs but we sell alot of them to nymph fishermen as they last forever. They float well too. All of our floating leaders are pre-treated with Loon's Premium Aquel floatant. They are slightly stiffer than the thread leaders and weigh more so land faster. They are more flexible though than monofilament leaders . We frequently make these down to a 2-wt size and up to an 8-wt. "Uber Strong" has been used to describe our Stealth Spider furled leaders!

The fluorocarbon furled leaders are used for sinking setups. They are nice for stripping a crackleback with a floating line as they sink well. They are stiffer than the spiderwire but more supple than monofilament and heavier than either. They will turn over about anything. We treat the sinking Fluorocarbon leaders with Xink to help get them down fast.

Our latest innovations are hybrid furled leaders tailored for specialized flyfishing techniques. These premium leaders use a blend of materials to match the leader performance to the application. We now make a Czech Nymph furled leader that features a bright floating butt section with an invisible sinking tip. Also new to the lineup is a furled leader we call the "Nymph Master" furled leader. A wonderful blend of stiffness and visibility. The Nymph Master excels at turning over multi-fly nymph rigs and its bright color eliminates the need for an indicator. They also float very well. These are hot!

Do Dad & Em's Furled Leaders Float?...
Yes, they float and do so very well! All of our floating leaders are pre-treated with Loon's Premium Aquel floatant before being furled to completely saturate the leader material with floatant. They will easily float for a good 6 to 8 hours of fishing before needing any added floatant. If you do need to treat them use a little of your favorite floatant to keep them riding high all day long! We do suggest carrying a few spares though so if your leader does somehow get waterlogged you can easily swap it out for a dry one. Let the swamped leader dry out overnight, retreat with floatant and it will be good as new! It is important to know that once a thread-based furled leader is waterlogged, adding floatant won't usually help!

What size & length should I order?...
For the size or "Wt" of the furled leader, just match it to your fly line. We make leaders for line weights from 0-wt up to 8-wt. If you have a 4-wt line, order a 4-wt leader. We have computer designed all of our leaders to match perfectly with the line weight they are made for.

The length is a little more flexible. We make furled leaders from 3' to 7' to match any fishing style. We generally like to match the length of the furled leader plus attached tippet to the rod length, +-1 foot. Shorter for nymphing and heavier rigs and longer for dry flies. So with a 9' rod and fishing a dry fly we use a 6' or 7' thread furled leader with 3' of 6x or 7x tippet tied to tippet ring with an improved clinch knot. Total length of 9' or 10'. For nymphing with a 9' 4-wt we use a 5' thread or mono leader with 4' of 6x tippet. So 9' total length. This allows you to run the indicator up and down the tippet and keep most of the leader on the surface. Also, a leader plus tippet matched to your rod length allows you to fight the fish to the fly line loop, lift the rod and bring the fish to hand without running the fly line loop into the tip top guide. For our 7' 3-wt we use a 4' furled leader and 3' of 6x fluoro tippet.

What Color Should I Order?...
Colors are up to you. We have fished with many different colors and the fish don't seem anymore spooked with hot pink than with a color that matches the water. The two-tone camo colors do tend to blend better with the water and we feel these do offer a slightly more stealthy appearance. The brighter colors are definitely easier for the fisherman to see though! If you don't see what you want, just ask. We can customize a leader for your application! We have made solid hot pink furled leaders for casting instructors. They rave about the leaders and how much easier it is to evaluate students casting loops.

Indicator Furled Leaders...
Indicator leaders feature a standard thread butt section with a bright colored tip section. We can put a bright indicator section on any of our standard colors. The indicator leaders are nice for hi sticking a bh midge or weighted nymph or just floating a small emerger pattern with little to no weight. Too much weight though will sink them. We sell a bunch of these in different colors. We have found that the leader colors don't seem to affect the MO and AR trout we usually go after. We think the 3' of tippet helps seperate the leader from the fly and the trout don't seem to be bothered by the bright colors. Em uses a HOT pink leader and has no problem catching fish!

Furled Leader Starter Pack...
For newcomers to furled leaders that want to "try them out" and see how they work and what fits their style, We usually recommend getting a couple thread furled leaders for dry fly and nymphing, and a mono furled leader for heavier nymphing and streamers. Maybe a fluoro leader for a sinking leader. Here is a starter pack that we typically recommend for an
Ozarks Flyfisherman with a 9' 4-wt setup...
* 6' 4-wt Bennett Tinge (Perfect for dry flies)
* 5' 4-wt Ozark Jewel (For dries and light nymphing)
* 5' 4-wt Nymph Master (Awesome for multi-fly nymph rigs)
*5' 4-wt The Sinker (Sinking leader for Cracklebacks to streamers)
